Families,
Hi there. I hope you are all having a wonderful fall season. I just wanted to give you an update on student progress. We have successfully completed our introduction into the scientific method, scientific drawing, and to the engineering design process. We are now moving our way into the space. We will spend the next few weeks discussing the following concepts. What is a lightyear? What is the universe? What is a galaxy? What is a solar system? How far away are all these things in space time? Take a look at the cool space videos I upload over the next few weeks. I encourage you to discuss these topics with your child and challenge your own understanding of the cosmos. Enjoy! Mrs. Lindsey Las familias, Hola. ¡Disfrutar! Mrs. Lindsey

Get ready for this! Your student just finished phase one of the tootsie pop challenge. They discovered that it takes the average licker close to 350 licks to get to the tootsie pop center of a tootsie pop. Just check out the data on the science page. Our class made topped 17,000 licks in total during our investigation. That's a lot of licking. Stay tuned because this is only the beginning. This week our scientists are working on a phase two. During phase two students will be using the engineering design process to construct a safety divice for their tootsie pop so it can be safely transported to a different location. Ask them about it and get involved. You may already notice them asking for some items from home to build these devices. In other news, remember that students are expected to show up to class with a positive attitude and be ready to learn. Due to parent feedback, I am also no longer going to post my lessons here. Students will still have access to these from school and are welcome to ask if they need any additional information.
Thank you! Hello OHI Families,
Welcome to fall! Quick reminder that the weather is getting cold. As a class we take a daily walk to get our brains buzzing and our bodies moving. Don't forget to send your student with some cold weather cloths. I am happy to announce that we will be working on some fall projects in the month or so. Stay tuned! Also, a big round of applause to our science classes for conducting their first investigation. Check out the data they collected on the tootsie pop challenge. Looks like this year's classes collectively made over 17,000 licks to get to the centers of their tootsie pops. Wow. We are also progressing steadily on our math review of 5th grade standards. We will be working on grade level content by the beginning of October. You may have also noticed the Spanish translation for some different things on my website. We have a great group of English Language Learners that we are blessed with this year. In an effort to create a welcoming and enriching environment for them I have translated all the lessons we are doing in Spanish to help and my Spanish speaking families in the educational loop (Complements of google translate). A warm thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to your child! What a great group of young scholars! Mrs. Lindsey Hello Oak Harbor Intermediate School families!
Welcome to Mrs. Lindsey's Science Blog. This year is OHI's first year integrating a fully STEM program. We are dedicating to making sure that your student receives the best education possible. My hope is for us to get off to a good start. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to better accommodate you and your student/s. I am also interested in having volunteers come during certain class projects. If you are interested in helping out, please feel free to send me an email. I will make sure to inform you in advance to any project dates that may require parent/guardian involvement. Students will be coming home with a syllabus the first week of school. Please read, initial and sign the bottom and return to school no later than September 11th, 2018. Thank you and have a wonder start to the school year! Mrs. Lindsey Seasons greetings families!
The days are shorter and the brisk air has taken hold of your small ocean community once more. Winter break in nearly here! This time of year I always take a few days to decompress and enjoy my students. They also get a chance to enjoy each other's company through some fun and interactive winter themed lessons. My favorite topic to teach during the holiday season is the history of snowflake photography. If you are interested in learning more yourself you can watch the videos I posted. These videos will also be viewed during class. Students this week will also create an original piece of artwork of their own for your family to keep and enjoy for years to come. I wish you all joy this holiday season, From the Lindsey family to all of you! Mrs. Lindsey Hello,
Thank you for being such a great group of families this year! I wanted to take a few minutes to remind you that Thanksgiving Break is coming up soon. Remember to take this time to be with the people in your life that make you smile. Don't sweat the small stuff! Just stuff your hearts with love, your minds with rest, and your stomachs with all the comfort foods you can eat. We will be doing one more big project before our long weekend. Talk to your child this week about the impacts humans have on natural resources in the environment. Don't forget to look at our new video links. I often post videos that will inspire curiosity. These videos are not always related to our featured topic. Stay up to speed on what your student is learning in science by exploring the classroom resources tab. My ultimate goal is to make learning science an enjoyable experience for your 6th grader. All great accomplishments in like take hard work and dedication to achieve. Together with your help we will make your student's success a reality! Mrs. Lindsey We are working on creating a scale model of the solar system in class. This will help student better understand the magnitude of space and the role we play little blue planet. If you are interested in viewing the video we watched in class here it is...I hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Stay tuned for more! Mrs. Lindsey What's new in science welcome back letter! Welcome!
Thank you for visiting my website. For many of you this is your child's first time taking an actual science class. I am so happy to inform you that we have come a long way even since last year. I am proud to announce that we will be rolling out a brand new curriculum called Stemscopes that will strengthen our use of technology and engineering in the classroom. This program will also enable you as a parent or guardian to interact with you learner through the website at home. In turn, this program will help alleviate the iconic question that all parents/guardians have when their student comes home from school: "what did you do today?" Well, in closing I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you who are joining my classroom for the first time this year, and for those who are returning a warm welcome back! Mrs. Lindsey Nothing is more exciting then having your student tell you all about what he or she learned in science. Don't forget to ask your student what they learned about rocks this week. In other news we are going to have a fossil dig soon. Your student will be able to keep the fossil they find and an end of the year gift from me!
It is sometimes hard to imagine how very small our little blue planet is in the vast emptiness of space. We are passengers on a cosmic rollercoaster. Ask your student what he or she has learned so far as we explore our universe.
